Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT) Improve Cognitive Function

Foods high in MCT, such as coconut, could potentially improve cognitive function in the elderly population.

In a new study in “The Journal of Nutrition”, researchers randomized 64 elderly nursing home residents to increase their daily intake of MCT or LCT. After 3 months, the subjects receiving the MCT showed a 3.5 increase in a test of cognitive function called the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Conversely, the LCT group showed a small decline in scores over the 3 months.

Conclusions

It is possible that MCT may have a positive impact on cognitive function in certain populations.
