Prunes Decrease Bone Resorption

Many health disorders related to the integrity of the skeletal system, such as osteoporosis or osteopenia, involve elevated levels of bone resorption. New research has found that prunes may be one strategy for combatting these types of disorders.

In a new study in the “Journal of Medicinal Food”, researchers instructed subjects to increase daily prune consumption. After two weeks, beta-crosslinked (CTX) had decreased, suggesting lower levels of bone resorption.

Conclusions

By reducing bone resorption, prunes may have a beneficial health effect on patients at high risk for skeletal disorders. Future research would be valuable to examine the long-term effects and relevant outcomes in this population.
