Repetitive Motions from Sports Cause Major Muscle Imbalances

The high volume of repetitive motions that result from playing sports can lead to major muscle imbalances.

A new study followed 31 competitive swimmers over the course of three years. Over the course of this timespan, the researchers observed notable decreases in both the external rotators of the shoulder as well as the lower trapezius.

Conclusions

This study emphasizes the importance for athletes to follow a proper strength and conditioning program in conjunction with their sports training. With the proper guidance of a skilled strength coach or therapist, these imbalances could be avoided. Without any intervention, however, sports can lead to these unfavorable muscle imbalances which can dramatically increase the risk for injury.
