Best Strength Training Programs Combine Vertical and Horizontal Exercises

The best strength training programs provide a balanced blend of both vertical and horizontal exercises.

In a new study in the “Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research”, 12 athletes were instructed to perform squats in order to increase vertical strength. 12 athletes were instructed to perform glute bridges in order to increase horizontal strength. After 20 weeks, the athletes who had performed squats showed superior improvement in vertical activities, such as vertical jump. The athletes who had performed glute bridges showed superior improvements in horizontal activities, such as broad jump and sprint times.

Conclusions

A well-rounded strength training program should include an even balance between horizontal and vertical exercises.
