Melatonin and Circadian Rhythm May Influence Depression and Fibromyalgia

There may be a strong influence of the hormone melatonin on severity of depression and fibromyalgia symptoms.

A new study in the “Journal of Pain Research” measured levels of the sleep hormone, melatonin, in 37 subjects who suffered from either fibromyalgia or clinical depression. In the healthy subjects, melatonin secretion occurred primarily at night. In unhealthy patients, however, the majority of melatonin secretion occurred during the day, and the magnitude daytime melatonin secretion significantly correlated with severity of symptoms.

Conclusions

Dysregulation of circadian rhythms, possible as a result of too much blue light during the nighttime hours, could having a strong impact on many health disorders including depression and fibromyalgia.
